Advances in Sustainable Fashion: Zero Waste Design—A Multi-dimensional Approach
摘要
The fashion industry has a deep impact on our environment, with textile waste being a significant threat. We can overcome this issue by moving towards sustainable fashion. Sustainable fashion is the concept of developing a garment that causes minimal damage to our environment. Sustainable fashion uses eco-friendly practices. One of those is the zero waste design. The zero waste design is a tool as well as a process. It is a tool when techniques like 5Rs are used, and it is a process when designers and manufacturers rethink the processes and materials to create products that are durable and can either be recycled or reused. This chapter discusses how zero waste design can be used for promoting sustainable fashion. The concept of utilising zero waste design in designing and pattern making, production, disposal, and circularity is discussed in detail in this chapter. The chapter also highlights the advancements of the zero waste design in sustainable fashion and examines its potential for minimal wastage and the promotion of circularity. This chapter also discusses the technological innovations to implement the zero-wastage program, like the usage of advanced CAD to produce intricate patterns with optimal fabric usage. This chapter also emphasises the importance of material selection in achieving zero waste. The zero waste design allows to take a huge turn from ‘take, make, dispose’ to ‘design, reuse and restore’, thereby leading to sustainable fashion.
