Various sources of carbon emissions of the construction lifecycle such as design, manufacture in the production of the construction materials, transportation, building, operations and maintenance, and lastly deconstruction are presented in the review study. Among the options that have been studied currently on how to reduce carbon footprints at different stages are the use of alternative sources of water, optimizations in the design, recycling construction waste, alternate additives to the materials and the basic enhancements in water and building system efficiency. Research has indicated that other materials, substances, procedures and systems could cut the amount of CO2 emission by almost 90% at various stages of construction and operation of a building making construction industry to be the largest emitters of carbon of all establishments with minimal space required to cut down their emissions. This is a priceless tool as clients and other stakeholders can use it to make informed judgments on the choice of materials and systems and create environmental awareness on impacts of manufacturing, transporting, and constructing actions.
