Gendered Dimensions of Water Security and Food Supply: Examining Women’s Health and Leadership in Gangani Census Mouza, West Bengal

The gender aspect is essential when it comes to access to water and food. The study is concentrated on the Gangani village of Garhbeta. A significant part of the village is dominated by rapid gully erosion and the formation of Badlands. A substantial part of the village is covered by agricultural land and forest. Households are located in the northeastern and southwestern parts of the village, surrounded by badland topography. The people of Gangani mouza are living in the Badlands. As per the 2011 census, the village had 500 households. Now it has approximately increased to 650. One hundred household surveys were conducted to carry out the present study. Household surveys were conducted using seven sets of questionnaires and interviews with village women. A random stratified sampling method has been employed. The objectives of the study are to identify how women obtain, manage, and use water for household purposes. It is also aimed at determining the impact of water insecurity on women’s physical and mental health, including issues related to sanitation and proper nutrition. Another aim is to evaluate women’s participation in community water governance and decision-making. A frequency distribution table has been prepared based on the survey data. Different chart methods through MS Excel have been employed for the graphical representation of data. The comprehensive relationship between gender roles, access to natural resources, and social well-being has been adequately identified. The women in Gangani village play a significant role in resource management and community leadership.
