This study explored how hybrid service-learning (h-SL) addressed the financial management needs of agricultural cooperative (agri-coop) members. Hybrid service learning is an experiential, outcome-based, and learner-centered pedagogical method that utilizes both online and in-person modalities. This research employed the IPARD Service-Learning Model in conducting the project. It also utilized qualitative data-gathering procedures: the agri-coop members’ and students’ reflections and interviews, as well as focus group discussions, to triangulate the findings. In the Planning and Design Stages, we conducted an in-person needs assessment with agri-coop members which showed that they needed enhancement in bookkeeping. The training lasted for 6 weeks. We designed a hybrid modality due to the distance between agri-coops and the University of the Philippines Mindanao (34.3 km). In the Action Stage, we conducted two hybrid sessions in which the instructor (first author) and agri-coop members attended in-person sessions in the community, while the students participated online. The tasks included creating and reviewing the modules. In the succeeding sessions, all training was done online using Zoom and Google Sheets. The students coached the members in bookkeeping using MS Excel. After the SL project, the findings were the following: (1) Student reflections revealed that the program developed the practical application of bookkeeping knowledge and skills in the context of cooperatives (2) The coop members performed the simple bookkeeping and passed the post-test by submitting a worksheet to the external validator who is an expert in the field. The study highlights that hybrid service-learning yields positive outcomes for both students and cooperative members recommending the continuation of SL engagements with the agri-coops targeting other cooperative management needs such as governance, leadership, organizational, marketing and operational knowledge and skills.

Hybrid service learning is an experiential, outcome-based, and learner-centered pedagogical method that utilizes both online and in-person modalities.
