The Erasmus+ programme is one of the European Union's (EU) most successful initiatives to promote student mobility. The metaverse’s emergence can introduce a new dimension to the Erasmus experience, enabling virtual mobility, collaborative learning, and innovative educational opportunities. This paper envisions the integration of immersive technologies into the Erasmus+ programme through the development of a Metaverse Erasmus Hub, a visionary platform to enhance the mobility experience across all four key phases: the pre-departure phase, the arrival and integration phase, the academic or training phase, and the post-mobility phase. The proposal describes how the metaverse can complement physical mobility by providing interactive and person-centred environments. The paper outlines potential directions that could inspire future European Commission (EC) initiatives aimed at creating a digital ecosystem to support international student engagement and participation. It also explores the main challenges, including ethical issues, and possible solutions for successfully and equitably implementing the metaverse in education.
