A Bad Ending to a Great Start
摘要
After a couple of months in Santa Cruz replenishing with local supplies to make up for the dwindling wine and biscuit rations, Magellan’s fleet resumed its voyage. Sailing south, in late October 1520 they reached Punta Vírgenes (modern Punta Dungeness), a land opening that hinted of a passage. Magellan dispatched the San Antonio and the Concepción to explore, but a sudden gale scattered the fleet, leaving Magellan fearing the two ships lost. Days later, they reappeared jubilantly, convinced they had found a strait leading westward. What began with celebration soon turned grim, with the desertion of the San Antonio.
