Bolsonarismo : Popular Support for Bolsonaro and Issue Positions in Contemporary Brazil
摘要
This chapter examines public opinion, focusing on issue positions, attitudes toward democracy, and Bolsonarism. The main argument is that Bolsonarism represents an unprecedented conservative and right-wing mass politics alignment with strong antidemocratic attitudes mirroring the positions of its main leader, Bolsonaro. Brazilian public opinion, as we show, is fertile ground for Bolsonarism, as conservative positions on gender politics and law and order prevail, favorable to the Bolsonarist agenda. In addition, these issues consistently align with support for Bolsonaro. We use survey data with representative samples of the Brazilian population to present these results and to test for correlation of issue positions and authoritarian attitudes with support for Bolsonaro. We show that Bolsonaro supporters are not just conservative voters but adhere to antidemocratic solutions, representing clear authoritarian enclaves in Brazilian society.
