Importance of the Venous Compartment
摘要
Compared to the functional assessment of the heart and arteries, the evaluation of the venous compartment has been widely ignored, partly because of large interindividual variations and interference from other body systems but mainly because of technical difficulties. In this chapter, it is illustrated that maternal venous Doppler assessment has been shown to be feasible and has strong discriminative power between pre-eclampsia and gestational hypertension. Due to methodological limitations and pitfalls, the application of maternal venous Doppler sonography today is still limited to research settings, where it has clearly shown the clinical relevance of including the evaluation of abdominal venous functions in future maternal haemodynamic assessment protocols.
