The field of pharmacogenomics (PGx) enhances clinical decision-making by utilizing genetic information to predict response to medication therapy. Knowledge of genetic terminology and testing strategies is key to implementing PGx and interpreting testing reports to improve medication outcomes. Clinical application support tools, such as ClinPGx, are available to support PGx-related decision making. Lack of standardized reporting, reimbursement challenges, and limited electronic healthcare record (EHR) integration include barriers to more systematic PGx implementation. Pretreatment testing is the most common clinical application model; preemptive and reactive approaches also have clinical utility in specific situations. While genetic data does not change, re-evaluating PGx results as new scientific data emerges is a worthwhile endeavor. Optimal integration of PGx into practice requires interprofessional collaboration, development of standardized practices, and infrastructure that facilitates data sharing.
