The final chapter is based on author visits to a number of preserved bomb shelter/ museum spaces such as in Barcelona, Alicante, and Cartagena as well as on secondary accounts of similar cites like Valencia and other Spanish communities. It puts the emergence of such commemorative spaces within the context of the revival of historical memory in Spain in the last twenty-five years, usually through the excavation of mass graves from the civil war era. What emotions do such memory spaces hope to evoke ion the visitor? Focused on the fear of bombing, and the environment of “total war” and the solidarity of the citizenry in opposing aerial bombardment through the construction of shelters and the fight for their own self-preservation, the existence of these sites reflects an important part of the story of the civil war and air war in Spain.
