This chapter explores Africa’s infrastructure development and its importance for alleviating poverty, creating jobs, and empowering youth, particularly in rural areas. Despite vast resources, poor infrastructure limits industrial growth, leads to exporting unprocessed resources, and hampers economic potential. Africa requires billions of dollars annually to bridge the significant infrastructure gap, which will shape the continent’s infrastructural demands. Infrastructure deficits hinder productivity, GDP growth, and access to education, healthcare, and transportation. Investing in quality infrastructure is essential to reaching the SDGs and Agenda 2063. In sub-Saharan Africa, infrastructure is critically underdeveloped, and the majority of the population lacks access to basic infrastructure, which hinders access and poor infrastructure deters investment, especially in rural areas. Furthermore, fundings come from governments, international institutions, and private partnerships, but challenges like poor planning, corruption, and political interference hinder progress. Strengthening regulation, transparency, and public-private partnerships are crucial. Better infrastructure will benefit rural areas, boost trade, and promote industrialisation. Addressing the infrastructure gap requires investment, planning, and good governance for sustainable, inclusive development.
