Wellbeing and Mental Health Promotion at School. The Case of Romania

This chapter will present facts related to wellbeing at schools in Romania, considering the main educational policies at the national and local levels, the wellbeing of students, teachers, families, and the topic of school environment. The chapter will present good practices already implemented for promoting wellbeing at school and also will analyze the strengths and weakness related to this topic. Also, the wellbeing in Romanian schools will be presented through the lens of curricula, describing the types of curricular and extracurricular activities for students. An important issue is related to students’ stress and difficulties (emotional, behavioral, social) and the measures to meet the need for wellbeing promoting. Teachers’ wellbeing will be presented in terms of actual national and school policies, also pointing out the nowadays challenges of Romanian schools. In the last years, Romanian teachers reported increased rates of stress and burnout, derived from heavy workload, precarious conditions, especially in rural areas, low pay, continuous reforms, and changes within educational system. Existing policies and measures will be presented and analyzed and implications for school wellbeing will be discussed. The chapter will provide results of researchers conducted to survey the wellbeing and mental health of both students and teachers and will draw the implications for promoting wellbeing at school.
