Preserving Human Dignity in Clinical Care
摘要
This book devotes considerable attention to supporting the dignity and humanity of every individual. But what does that truly mean? This chapter explores the distinction between intrinsic dignity—the inherent moral worth every person possesses—and extrinsic dignity—the value society assigns to an individual. It examines how illness and the dynamics of the doctor–patient relationship can unintentionally erode a patient’s dignity, and why restoring it is essential during times of suffering. Drawing on the insights of renowned bioethicist Edmund Pellegrino, the chapter outlines best practices for reaffirming and restoring a person’s dignity, ensuring that compassionate care remains at the heart of medicine.
