Ethical dilemmas occur in many medical situations and create stress for the healthcare team, the patient, and their family. These fall into several categories including diagnostic evaluations, treatment decisions, escalation of care, and withdrawal of care. Working through these requires a team effort and often involves the hospital ethics team, social work, patient navigators, family advocates, and risk management. These key players convene to determine the best way to move forward. We will explore these situations in this chapter and help you recognize when to pull in others for help.
