Spectral Sounds: Ghost Stories on Audio Media
摘要
The chapter critically assays audio ghost dramas, a longstanding feature of Anglophone radio and audio media, through sonic hauntology, exploring their manifestation of spectres that are present yet disembodied, apparitions that express malevolent qualities of the acousmêtre, and spirits that upend linear temporality through dyschronic stories. It also engages secondary orality elements of audio ghost dramas that provide listeners with aspects of collective experience. The chapter examines exemplars of core haunting types from the 1930s to the 2010s, including vengeful revenants, ghostly journeys, haunted technology, and radio adaptations, situating them historically, culturally, and exploring their contributions to the ghost story.
