Transition to Primary School in Indonesia: Practices and Challenges
摘要
This chapter explores the practices and challenges around transition to primary school in Indonesia. It provides a brief history of the characteristics of the early childhood (especially kindergarten) and primary education systems. Specifically, teachers’ knowledge and skills and parents’ perspectives and practice in supporting children’s transition are explored. The contribution of the Indonesian government in making policy regarding children’s transition to primary school, and practice dilemmas, are also explained. Even though the transition to primary school in Indonesia has been a priority area, time is needed to change teachers’ and parents’ understanding in order to minimise the discontinuities for children entering primary school. Continuing efforts and collaboration between stakeholders involved in children’s education are crucial to support a smooth transition for children.
