Research and Practice on Transitions to School in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
摘要
The United Arab Emirates [UAE] has an educational system unlike anywhere else in the world. The population of the UAE is predominantly expatriate and made up of more than 200 nationalities. The educational system has private and public sectors with attendance determined by nationality and a diversity which has evolved to meet the needs of the communities served. This chapter provides a description of the UAE in terms of history, population, and educational landscape. The practices of transitioning support are then outlined through the use of case studies from schools within the private and public sectors. All of the research on starting school in the UAE has been conducted solely within the last 5 years within Abu Dhabi by one group of researchers and is, therefore, somewhat limited in nature. Nevertheless, the research provides interesting snapshots of the experiences and expectations of key stakeholders. Detailed description of the research and a critique thereof is provided, with a view to highlighting future areas of investigation, specifically focusing on actionable research which can be used to inform policy and practice to facilitate optimal starting school experiences for children in the UAE.
