Emerging contaminants are substances which have been identified as toxic pollutants during recent years. The compounds which have been identified as emerging contaminants are personal care products, pharmaceuticals, hormones, heavy metals, nanoparticles, pesticides, etc. Some of these compounds are released from the medical, agricultural, industries, textile mill, etc. This chapter gives an idea about the various kinds of emerging contaminants their adverse effect on the marine life as well as humans, the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of these compounds within the organism and it also deals with regulation and management of the pollutants. Various adverse effects of these emerging contaminants have been a global concern because they lead to reproductive difficulties in both marine life and humans, it even increases feminisation in fish thereby damaging the reproductive health of the organism. Even though many countries have implemented various acts and principles such as REACH, CWA and SDWA the regulation of these substances is yet to be studied. Many traditional methods have been implemented in order to eliminate them such as precipitation, adsorption and filtration but due to their cost and complexity their implementation in a larger aspect they are being replaced with biologicals and sustainable methods. Hence, the study on emerging contaminants in marine ecosystem must be done in order to understand influence of them on the environment as well as human welfare.

摘要
