Infographics for Teaching Chinese to Develop Socio-Cultural Competence: The Examples of Chinese Traditional Holidays

Culture plays a huge role in the second language learning. This work is devoted to study the importance of forming a socio-cultural competence and to present the specific examples while teaching Chinese language. The article reveals the peculiarities related to the traditions and cultural values of China. The author of the article pays special attention to the infographic tools while simultaneous learning of Chinese language and culture. Much attention in the article is paid to the use of interactive teaching methods on the basis of which the formation of socio-cultural competence occurs. The article presents the examples of work-organizing process and describes the process of infographic components creation. The study highlights that infographics can be an effective educational tool for all language activities. Using infographics develops intercultural understanding and expands students’ vocabulary. This research involved the development and assessment of a unit on Chinese holidays. Examples of exercises and methodological recommendations for teachers are discussed. The assessments were based on the participants’ oral response to one-to-one interviews and whole-group sessions.
