We mentioned already that the cohomology and homology groups of an arithmetic group have an additional structure: they are modules for the Hecke algebra. The following description of the Hecke algebra is somewhat provisional - we get a richer Hecke algebra if we work in the adelic context (see Chapter 6). The description here is more intuitive.
