The ‘clearing’ of the Highland population increased, but aided by Lowland sympathisers, and inspired by events in Ireland, resistance began to grow. In the Lowlands, with the widening of the franchise, political change was accelerating, including the call for ‘Home Rule’. Meanwhile, social and housing conditions in Scotland’s urban areas worsened, but none of this was reflected in the literary works of the time.
