This chapter covers general recommendations for initial contact with patients meeting the clinical high risk (CHR) criteria, which are outlined below. For children and adolescents with CHR symptoms, the initial consultation is often accompanied by mistrust, uncertainty, anxiety, and prejudice. Therefore, it is important to create a welcoming atmosphere during the initial contact that allows for open discussion of difficult topics and symptoms. The second part of this chapter addresses the specific challenges of working with adolescents meeting the CHR criteria. The chapter then focuses intensively on building a relationship between therapist and patient, which in many ways is similar to creating rapport with patients with other psychiatric problems. The chapter concludes with a discussion of working with the patient’s family.
