Cosmeceutical Nanocrystals
摘要
The cosmetic industry occupies a distinctive and influential position in contemporary society, engaging consumers in ways that often surpass those of the pharmaceutical sector. While pharmaceuticals play a critical role in addressing health concerns, they are primarily utilized by individuals who are ill. In contrast, cosmetics are integrated into the daily lives of diverse individuals, transcending age, gender, and cultural boundaries. From skincare to makeup, these products not only enhance physical appearance but also serve as tools for self-expression and confidence enhancement, rendering them essential components of personal care. Despite their widespread use, numerous cosmeceutical active ingredients demonstrate poor water solubility, which can impede their efficacy in final products. Enhancing solubility is crucial to ensure that these ingredients effectively reach their intended sites of action. Various strategies have been employed to improve the solubility of such compounds; however, these methods often present challenges, such as the limited encapsulation efficiency associated with lipid-based nanovesicles. As a result, a matrix-free formulation approach that enhances solubility could offer significant advantages for cosmetics. Nanocrystals represent a promising matrix-free platform that can improve solubility, bioactivity, and the ability to traverse biological barriers effectively. This chapter explores the utilization and application of nanocrystals, as well as plant-derived nanocrystals, within the realm of cosmetics.
