Patch Adams, a middle-aged man suffering from depression, admits himself voluntarily into a mental institution, where his story begins. He believes that humor is a mainstay for the emotional wounds healing. Driven by this realization, he enrolls in the Medical College of Virginia to become a doctor who treats both the body and the soul. Adams’ unique approach, using laughter and compassion, leads to conflicts with the dean, who always believes medicine must remain impersonal. Despite repeated challenges, including expulsions from the college and the loss of his beloved Carin, Patch remains persistent in his efforts to humanize healthcare. With the help of his friends and colleagues, he establishes a free clinic for patients without medical insurance, deeply rooted in kindness and humor.
