The film Ikiru explores truth-telling, the nature of suffering, and the meaning of life. The protagonist, Mr. Watanabe, is a widowed bureaucrat who leads a stagnant, meaningless life, motivated only by saving money for his selfish son. When diagnosed with gastric cancer, his doctors conceal the truth. After realizing his prognosis, Watanabe falls into an existential crisis. Following a period of despair and failed hedonism, he finds purpose by tenaciously fulfilling a community group’s long-ignored request to replace a swamp with a children’s playground. This final altruistic act gives meaning to his life, and when he dies, he is genuinely mourned by those he helped.
