Medial Constructions of Urban Imaginations
摘要
From the time we are young, we are confronted with pictures of the city. These images shape our understanding of urban systems and lifestyles in countless ways, thus influencing our worldviews. Because visual representations have meaning, it is important to consider how they affect the socialization process and influence our interpretation, values, and practices. Starting from these more general assumptions, the aim of this paper is to take a closer look at how “the urban” is produced in different (mostly visual) media, in order to understand how these constructions shape our urban imaginations. Therefore, I will introduce some ideas on film, videogames, social media, and renderings, drawing on studies by geography scholars from German- and English-speaking contexts, in order to give an overview of how medial constructions of cities can work.
