Fake News and Post-Truth Geographies
摘要
Fake news plays a major role today in undermining democracies and trust in government. This chapter sketches the colorful history of fake news from yellow journalism to the digital age. Second, it focuses on how fake news has been deployed by right-wing political groups to spread disinformation, typically in the service of neoliberalism. While fake news unfolds across the world, the focus here is on the U.S. It notes President Trump’s habitual lying as a prime example and the role of the reactionary mediasphere, notably Fox News, in disseminating it. Third, it examines fake news in light of several prevailing theories of truth, notably those offered by Habermas and Foucault. Finally, it explores the spatial dimensions of fake news, including examples such as climate change denial and Trump’s border wall with Mexico, as well as how fake news is produced, consumed, and resisted.
