The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a significant change in both global and local governance, leading to government-enforced lockdowns, quarantines, social isolation, and social distancing that aggravated Canadians’ mental health and well-being. Although its effects were felt among the population generally, the pandemic disproportionately affected Black people. This study thus sought to address the following questions: How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect the overall well-being of the Black population in Scarborough, Ontario? What coping mechanisms did this community employ to manage the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic? The study recruited 20 Black people in Scarborough who access services from TAIBU Community Health Centre (TCHC) and 10 Black healthcare professionals in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The study employed in-depth interviews to collect data, and coding and thematization for data analysis. Findings revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the Black population in Scarborough. Some of the effects included anxiety, depression, and increased unemployment caused by pandemic-related restrictions. Participants used strategies such as routine exercises, watching movies, driving around to unknown destinations, and resuming work on stalled projects to minimize the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study recommends further investigation to ascertain the health, economic, and spiritual impact of the pandemic on Black communities.
