This Chapter—Moving beyond the individual, this chapter examines collective trauma as experienced by racial, ethnic, immigrant, refugee, military-connected, and other communities. It explores how cultural trauma is passed through generations via silence, loss, systemic inequities, often displaying through student disengagement or hypervigilance. Racial trauma and structural inequities in education are discussed with attention to practices that reinforce harm, such as exclusionary discipline. This chapter calls educators to recognize both visible and invisible weight students carry, framing schools as spaces where cultural recognition and system repair can begin.
