Optimization and Spatial Accessibility for the Location of Logistics Equipment in the Specialty Coffee Production Chain in a Region of Southern Colombia

Colombia is recognized for the production of high quality specialty coffees, but faces challenges in the commercialization and distribution of the product, mainly due to limitations in the transportation infrastructure and an inefficient territorial organization of logistical facilities, negatively impacting its competitiveness and sustainability. Spatial accessibility, understood as the possibility of accessing spatially dispersed opportunities through transportation infrastructure, is a key planning tool for assessing the efficiency of these chains. This study seeks to support strategic decision-making in the specialty coffee production chain by optimizing the location of purchasing points, maximizing spatial accessibility in the Department of Nariño. The proposed methodology is structured in three phases: (1) characterization of the network structure, (2) evaluation of potential accessibility (baseline), (3) identification of optimal locations for logistics facilities through a mixed integer linear programming model (MILP). The results indicate that increasing the number of purchase and collection points improves the potential accessibility suggesting an optimal number of 16, where the objective function reaches its maximum efficiency without unnecessary costs.
