A Diagnosis of Exclusion: Demystifying Neurodevelopmental Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure
摘要
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) encompasses neurodevelopmental impairments from prenatal alcohol exposure, affecting brain regions like the frontal cortex and cerebellum, leading to cognitive, behavioral, and social difficulties. Bobby, an 11-year-old with prenatal alcohol exposure, ADHD, anxiety, and PTSD, displayed aggression, self-injury, fecal smearing, and other behavioral challenges, consistent with alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND). Despite improvements with behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and medication, challenges with impulsivity, aggression, and social interaction persist. This case highlights the importance of clinician awareness and knowledge of FASD to ensure early diagnosis, tailored interventions, and effective management strategies for affected children.
