Neuropsychology, as defined by the American Psychological Association (APA), is the “branch of science that studies the physiological processes of the nervous system and relates them to behavior and cognition, in terms both of their normal function and of the dysfunctional processes associated with brain damage.” (Brown GG et al., APA handbook of neuropsychology: neuroscience and neuromethods. American Psychological Association, Washington, DC, 2023) Clinical neuropsychology is further defined by the APA as a “specialty field dedicated to understanding the relationships between brain and behavior, particularly as these relationships can be applied to the diagnosis of brain disorder, assessment of cognitive and behavioral functioning, and the design of effective treatment” (Brown GG et al., APA handbook of neuropsychology: neuroscience and neuromethods. American Psychological Association, Washington, DC, 2023). Neuropsychiatry may be viewed as the complementary medical field that unites elements of neurology and psychiatry to characterize, diagnose, and treat disorders that affect both neurological and psychological functioning. Together, neuropsychiatry and neuropsychology seek to understand how neural systems are involved in disorders presenting with both neurologic and psychiatric symptomatology.

摘要
