Most children and adolescents will completely recover from SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 infection without long-lasting effects. However, a subset of children will experience new, persistent, worsening, or fluctuating symptoms consistent with long COVID. Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common, including fatigue, cognitive difficulties or brain fog, headaches and pain, sleep disturbances, and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Many times, children and adolescents with long COVID will experience a constellation of symptoms. At this time, treatment of long COVID primarily focuses on symptom management/alleviation using lifestyle interventions, supportive therapies, and medications aimed at restoring physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning. Research on the pathogenesis and disease-modifying treatments is rapidly evolving on long COVID and other infection-associated chronic conditions.
