This chapter draws together the key themes of the book and spells out the importance of reconceptualising ‘exiting’ as career development as part of a new framework presented in the book. In using sex work as career to redefine ‘exiting’, we show how this can extend understandings of sex work as work and offer an alternative perspective to the abolitionist, mostly Western radical feminist view that dominates international debates. This can result in a paradigm shift, transforming sex work ‘exiting’ from something sex workers need to stop doing to sex work careers, analysed from the lives, agency, rights, voices and views of diverse peoples engaged in sex work. In this way, we link theory and practice in ways previously overlooked by researchers and academics to design a new framework that can create greater social acceptance of sex work as work and lead to changes in policy and practice. We also make a case for societal change by discussing the paradox of ‘exiting’: this area of programming claims to help workers but, as we argue, it is achieved at the cost of further compounding marginalisation and reinforcing harms, while simultaneously acting as a domain of oppression in their lives. Finally, we argue for the pressing need to include sex workers in the development of research, policy and programs and see this as a way to shift policy stagnation and challenge the morality politics and punitive and paternalistic responses to sex work and sex workers that perpetuate stigmatisation and marginalisation.
