Sex work ‘exiting’ programs are behavioural change interventions designed to support people stop selling sex. In this chapter, we introduce the topics of sex work and ‘exiting’, tracing its transformation from early feminist discourse connected to struggles over the meaning of sex work and state attempts to regulate it, to modern-day behavioural change programs as part of sex work abolition. We begin the chapter by setting the context for this book, describing how it developed from an Australian-UK collaboration, and provide an overview of the book’s key arguments. The book’s overarching strategy is to reconfigure sex work as career and explore the place of ‘exiting’ in this, which leads us to discuss the key questions grappled with in the book as part of our effort to build new theory in this area. The chapter also provides an overview of ‘exiting’ and because we argue that language matters, we outline some of the key terms used in the book. After this, we discuss the research settings and methods, explore some of the ethical issues and end the chapter with an overview of the book.
