Pharmacist education includes acquiring expertise in pharmacology and the spectrum of the most commonly used antimicrobials, as well as the commonly seen infectious syndromes and organisms and their unique resistance patterns. In clinical practice, pharmacists are tasked to maintain competency in the management of different infectious syndromes, acquire knowledge on novel antimicrobials, and minimize the impact of inappropriate use of antimicrobials while ensuring the resolution of an infection. A structured approach to assessing patients with infections ensures that antimicrobial use is appropriate: the right drug, dose, and duration for the right indication.
