Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by the occurrence of epileptic seizures. Pharmacists play an important role in the management of patients with epilepsy. They are able to assess the patients for the presence of any clinically significant drug interactions, adverse reactions, and red flag symptoms secondary to antiseizure medications (ASMs). In addition, they aid in the interpretation of ASM drug levels (therapeutic drug monitoring). Initial assessment of patients with epilepsy involves assessment of the appropriateness of the selected ASM given the patient’s seizure type and patient’s characteristics and assessment of the appropriateness of the dosage regimen of the selected ASMs. Assessment at follow-up involves exploring the patient’s adherence, seizure control, and the presence of any drug-related adverse reactions or toxicity.
