Transhumanism, a movement advocating radical human enhancement through science and technology, has renewed interest in Nietzsche’s philosophy. The “Coda” argues that transhumanist uses of Nietzsche are largely unfounded. It clarifies Nietzsche’s ethical views to show that his idea of human enhancement, unlike transhumanist interpretations, is rooted in traditional methods of cultivation, like upbringing and education. While Nietzsche’s ethics do not legitimize transhumanist ambitions, his critique of morality offers a lens through which to challenge transhumanist ideas of human improvement.
