Teaching Psychology in the Pacific Island of Guam: Service- and Research-Learning
摘要
In this chapter, the authors share their approach to teaching psychology in the Pacific island of Guam, with an emphasis on applying what students learn in the classroom to their work in the field through service- and research-learning. Three community-based service-learning opportunities are outlined, including programs focused on cancer support, violence against women, and suicide prevention. Three approaches to research-learning are also discussed, including introducing students to experimental methods, research methodology, and qualitative research through socially and culturally relevant projects. In both their service and research, students are encouraged to learn about and advocate for social change in their local communities. Ultimately, faculty at the University of Guam strive to provide students with the chance to make meaningful contributions to psychology both inside and outside the classroom.
