Psychology Education in the United States: An Examination of Past, Present, and Future

This chapter surveys the past, present, and future of psychology education in the United States, highlighting significant trends and sampling notable events and practices. First, the chapter briefly reviews the history of psychology and psychology teaching in this nation beginning in the late nineteenth century. Next the chapter examines current practices, both successes and challenges, such as with respect to diversity and curriculum content. Here the chapter samples several cutting-edge teaching practices, topics, and course foci, including the use of practices such as student research, study abroad programs, service learning, and honor societies. Finally, the chapter concludes with suggestions the direction psychology education in the United States is taking toward the future, with an emphasis on several emerging curricular developments and foci.
