The Current Landscape of English Language Teaching in Iran: A Balancing Act Between Tradition and Modernity
摘要
Applying the Pedagogical dimension as its primary focus, this chapter critically assesses the present state of English Language Teaching (ELT) in Iran. It contrasts the ambitious goals of national policy documents, such as the 20-Year Vision Plan, with the realities of classroom practice. The chapter examines the pedagogical paradox where a curriculum emphasizing communicative competence is undermined by high-stakes testing, limited instructional time, and a persistent grammar-translation legacy. It further explores the parallel rise of private language institutes and the informal learning driven by digital media. Through the MCELE lens, the chapter illustrates the tension between the official pragmatic resistance to Western culture and the public’s growing demand for English proficiency as a tool for global engagement and socioeconomic mobility.
