This chapter provides an introduction to water as one of the most important components of fire protection systems due to its effectiveness, relative availability, and low cost. Water extinguishes fires through cooling and through excluding oxygen by means of the volumetric expansion as the liquid changes to the gaseous state. The properties of water are discussed and presented along with that water, for all practical purposes, can be considered incompressible. Finally, common conversions between units are provided.

摘要

This chapter provides an introduction to water as one of the most important components of fire protection systems due to its effectiveness, relative availability, and low cost. Water extinguishes fires through cooling and through excluding oxygen by means of the volumetric expansion as the liquid changes to the gaseous state. The properties of water are discussed and presented along with that water, for all practical purposes, can be considered incompressible. Finally, common conversions between units are provided.
