Epilogue: Post War
摘要
This chapter explores the period just after the Nazi defeat. Many restorers who were captured by the Allies in the residences of the National Socialist elite, and in repositories in castles and mines, were ordered to cooperate with the restitution effort. Other German restoration personnel were employed by the Allies in dedicated Collecting Points where cultural materials were examined and processed for return to the countries from which they were looted. In the main, conservation rather than restoration work accompanied this. Other restorers whose work and political histories were problematic made strenuous efforts to rekindle professional relationships with formerly persecuted colleagues who had fled the Nazi regime or with Allied personnel. These connections were skilfully manipulated. Colleagues who had fled Nazi terror were used to vouch for perpetrators who needed them as vital stepping stones in concealing the consequences of their careers under the regime. Through this exploitation they attempted to forge a new professional life in prestigious public galleries outside Germany.
