A History of Modern Chinese Philosophy examines the philosophies of ten distinguished Chinese thinkers of the late nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century. The ten philosophers covered in this volume are Kang Youwei, Yan Fu, Liang Qichao, Wang Guowei, Hu Shi, Zhang Dongsun, Liang Shuming, Xiong Shili, Feng Youlan, and Jin Yuelin. This chapter explains the purpose and significance of the book and offers a summary of the philosophy of each philosopher examined in the volume. It also introduces historical background for modern Chinese philosophy and its relevance to our time.
