Today, China attempts to reshape regional orders to suit its national interests by actively initiating new regional projects and initiatives. The most large-scale and discussed modern “regional project” of China is the “Belt and Road”Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the emergence of which indicates the formation of the general contours of China's approach to regionalism. The purpose of this article is to define what type of regionalism the “Belt and Road” Initiative represents. To achieve this goal, the authors will examine the historyHistory of China's participation in regional projects from 1950s to the present, defining the characteristics of China as a regional leader on different stages. Finally, the authors will consider possible theoretical models of the “Belt and Road” InitiativeBelt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a new type of regionalismRegionalism: the BRI as a model of a “hybrid type of regional integrationIntegration with a Chinese character”; the BRI as a “globalizing Chinese regionalism”; the BRI as a new type of transregionalismTransregionalism and, finally, the BRI as a case of “global” region.
