Benefits and Drawbacks of Group Work
摘要
This chapter explores the complexity of group work by examining its benefits and challenges across theoretical, psychological, and practical dimensions. Rooted in preparing students for professional contexts, group work develops teamwork, leadership, analytical skills, and conflict management. Research shows it fosters achievement, interdependence, openness to diversity, and personal growth. Psychological perspectives highlight social facilitation, where others’ presence influences performance, and the Köhler effect, where weaker members increase effort when feeling indispensable. Virtual teams extend these dynamics into digital learning, offering flexibility and new challenges. Yet issues such as social loafing, free riding, and the sucker effect underscore risks, reinforcing the need for intentional design emphasising accountability and shared purpose.
