This chapter offers an exploratory case-study that focuses on the representations of Hester Stanhope in the British, Polish and German press between 1810s and 1840s. The comparative analyses take onboard English stories and their translations and adaptations. It is assumed that views on social norms frequently emerge between the source and transnational news, conveying attitudes, evaluations and stance regarding women or gender norms. The chapter shows that translated and adapted news stories modify representations of Hester Stanhope in terms of quality and quantity; tamper with female reference and change content when gender norms are at play, thus subtly reassessing negative or positive representations. The results of the study shed some new light on the role and forms of emotivity, evidentiality and reliability that are considered of central interest to historical news discourse (Brownlees and Bös 2023: 209).
