The chapter highlights the need to examine the processes of news translation and intertextuality for a full understanding of the historical development of the British and international press. The chapter places the twin, interconnecting topics of historical news translation and intertextuality within a methodological framework comprising both salient features of translation studies and intertextual borrowing and awareness. We aim to answer the following two questions: (a) When and how was translation employed in the dissemination of news into and out of English? (b) Apart from translation, in what other topic domains and genres does our understanding of news discourse benefit from intertextual comparison and linguistic analysis? The chapter also sets out the structure of the volume and the broad focus of the individual chapters making up its three major sections.

摘要
