The Epiphanic Dimension of Theurgy
摘要
This chapter examines the epiphanic dimension of theurgy in Iamblichus's philosophical framework. It analyses how epiphany functions as a critical element in his program to resignify communication with the divine through ritual practice. The text establishes Iamblichus's detailed spiritual taxonomy—a hierarchical cosmology where beings from gods to irrational spirits are categorised according to criteria including simplicity, constancy, beauty and luminosity. This taxonomy serves both to establish Iamblichus's spiritual authority and to create a roadmap for theurgic practitioners seeking divine communion. The chapter explores how divine fire and light serve as identifiers in spiritual manifestations, with each class of being displaying characteristic qualities that allow the theurgist to discern genuine divine presence. These epiphanies are not merely visual phenomena but transformative experiences that enable physical communication with intelligible beings. Ultimately, the chapter argues that Iamblichus positions theurgy's culmination as the attainment of eudaimonia—a holistic well-being encompassing both physical and spiritual dimensions. Unlike vulgar magic's focus on material benefits, theurgic epiphany provides the practitioner with divine knowledge and liberation from fate's constraints, establishing a pathway to communion with the One that transcends both philosophical contemplation and conventional religious practices.
