It highlights the significant public health implications of these enteric viruses, which are major contributors to gastroenteritis-related morbidity and mortality, particularly among children under five. The chapter also addresses environmental and socioeconomic factors influencing virus persistence in wastewater, challenges in detection, and advancements in molecular surveillance techniques. Furthermore, the chapter highlights the role of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) in monitoring viral outbreaks and informing public health interventions. Recommendations for improving virus detection and wastewater treatment efficiency in Africa are provided to enhance disease prevention and control strategies.
